Williamsburg Place Lecture Series

The Farley Center and The Pavilion host monthly professional workshops for area providers. These cutting edge presentations feature information on addiction, ethics, dual diagnosis, co-dependency, military and addiction, eating disorders, assessment, and process disorders. Workshops are held on the 4th Friday of each month from 9:00 am -11:00 am on the campus of Williamsburg Place.

The goal of this presentation is to present a balanced and evidence -based view of geropsychology to inform evidence-based practice in clinical as well as community settings.

Participants will understand how geropsychology is key to aging well across the lifespan (development).
Participants will be better able to apply pro-aging concepts to promote optimal psychological development for themselves and others.
Participants will be better informed about crafting evidence-based interventions for our current and future elders that promote optimal aging.
Participants will have a clearer understanding of the negative health impacts of ageism, internalized ageism, and microagression.
Participants will better understand how ageism, particularly internalized ageism can increase one’s risk for substance abuse and how a better understanding of the core g
Dr. Welleford received her B.A. in Management/Psychology from Averett College and her M.S. in Gerontology and Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has taught extensively in the areas of Lifespan Development, Adult Development and Aging, Geropsychology, and Aging & Human Values. As an educator, researcher, and previously as a practitioner, she has worked with a broad spectrum of individuals across the caregiving and long term care continuum.

As Associate Professor and Chair of VCU’s Department of Gerontology, she currently works to “Improve Elder Care through Education” through her Teaching, Scholarship and Community Engagement. Outside of the classroom, Dr. Welleford provides community education and serves on several boards and committees.
