Clinical Psychology: Education, Career, the goal in Pakistan
Clinical Psychology
A branch of psychology that deals with diagnosing and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders.
Clinical Psychology became more recognized during the second half of the 19th century, although clinical psychology wasn’t famous until the end of the 19th century. It was around this time that Lightner Witmer first helped treat a boy with a learning disability. In 1896, Witmer opened the first psychology clinic, which catered to children with disabilities. In 1907, he coined the phrase “clinical psychology” in his new psychology journal, called The Psychology Clinic.
How become a Clinical Psychologist?
Here I can have discussed this in two parts:
a. International Standard
b. Pakistan
According to APA, there are three main criteria for becoming a clinical psychologist:
i. Education: Ph. D in Psychology, which focuses on science and research or A PsyD, or Doctor of Psychology, which focuses on clinical work
ii. Experience: One-year internship
iii. Certificate for practice getting form Authorized body
In Pakistan, there are different condition
i. Education: 16-year education in Psychology or 16-year education in Psychology with one-year PGD diploma in Clinical Psychology
ii. Experience: Such as no specific criteria.
iii. No legal body is available to monitor such standards.
(Note: PPA is not yet registered or monitor any activity in Pakistan, however bill for legislation of PPA is under process)
