Getting stuck in the negatives (and how to get unstuck) | Alison Ledgerwood | TEDxUCDavis

Alison Ledgerwood joined the Department of Psychology at UC Davis in 2008 after completing her PhD in social psychology at New York University. She is interested in understanding how people think, and how they can think better. Her research, which is funded by the National Science Foundation, investigates how certain ways of thinking about an issue tend to stick in people’s heads. Her classes on social psychology focus on understanding the way people think and behave in social situations, and how to harness that knowledge to potentially improve the social world in which we all live.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  • Animal instinct teaches us to remember that one time we almost got eaten or crushed so we don't die the next time or the time after.

  • Get rid of your hate, all of it. Hate creates holes in your psyche and makes it hard to hold anything good in your heart. Even the tiniest bit of hate is detrimental and will keep you from being the positive being that you are.

  • Zzzzzzz

  • wow

  • She looks hangry

  • Check this out my friends πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ

  • Barbara Fredrickson and Daniel Siegel's research studies and books will help understand why we get stuck and how to get unstuck.

  • She is pretty 😍

  • With a haircut like hers no way she could say something smart

  • I don't describe it as half empty or half full, I'm just grateful that it has something in it.

  • Thanku.

  • Thank you, I really needed this. It takes practice, but it's well worth it, I bet.

  • I don't agree about this one. Most people balance their lives with positive and negative feelings and thoughts without the need of external input. She needs therapy, that's all.

  • The successful investors are those who saw the economy was recovering and put that information to good use.
The happy person is one who makes it a habit of seeing the good in everything.

  • Thank you for this my life is going down i was carless and I just realized it and im so anxious and i start to blame my mental health and i keep thinking that I might have this mental health issue not that and blaming me self and I just feel down and negative for the past 2 months I just wanna wake me self up to be back to the track to the normal positive me i was extremely positive with extra trust on people and guess what i am the same I just had a rainy days and thats it

  • Wow. The most negative intro sentence in the history of speeches. Makes you want to turn off the channel right then.

  • What might be the evolutionary roots (adaptive nature) of focusing on the negatives? πŸ€”

  • 600-100=500
How come this simple calculation take 11seconds?

  • Give thanks.

  • what the mind thinks thus reacts the body in chemistry….do nought and be free

  • 11 seconds to solve 600-100 is terrible – sorry if that sounds negative. πŸ˜„Great video and interesting topic!

  • excellent

  • SF

    Thank you so much

  • I missed the "(and how to get unstuck)" part. Perhaps I am thinking negatively toward this video. πŸ˜›

  • Given that our mind is focused also on risk (survival, after all) it is not so strange that negatives outweigh the positives. After all, the negatives (being eaten by a lion) rather outweigh the positives (finding a decent meal). Again, looking at animal behaviour (we're one too after all), one sees that only procreation has a large impact on risk-attitudes. So, it would be interesting to do that research again, but now with the positive being linked to procreation. I would not be surprised that the effect is smaller in that case.

  • This was so helpful. Definitely the path I am taking.

  • What a horrible politically charged presentation about brainwashing us into loving the failed economy and the blind acceptance of the falsified numbers of that time. It is also known that happy people behave as if they lost 2 to 5 IQ points as well. The reason negativity sticks is because there are very good reasons to be negative. The strong person can accept this and also be happy.
